WWF-India’s Small Grants Program for Conservation Research & Action

WWF-India is one of the largest organisations engaged in wildlife and nature conservation in the country. Established as a Charitable Trust in 1969, the organization has been working for over four decades on various aspects of conservation and environmental management. Starting as a wildlife conservation organization, WWF-India today works on a range of issues including species and habitat conservation, climate change, sustainable livelihoods, wetlands, marine and forest conservation, river basin and water management and environmental education.

SMALL GRANTS PROGRAM (SGP)
With the aim of encouraging young Indians to respond innovatively and independently to the conservation issues which affect the country, WWF-India is offering eligible individuals a one-time grant of up to Rs. 200,000 for carrying out conservation research or undertaking a conservation project. The primary objective of this grant is to provide financial capacity to individuals based in India, who have developed and wish to implement short-term conservation research or initiatives that can contribute to larger conservation goals.

The SGP will provide grants to individuals for activities and/or research that address issues and offer solutions or insights towards:

* Species and habitat related problems and concerns – with a focus on immediate threats and issues (e.g. vulture conservation)
* Enabling communities and other stakeholders to address local environmental concerns
* Improving local livelihoods through conservation and natural resources management or promoting livelihoods that reduce impacts on biodiversity
* Aspects of trade involving wildlife species
* Increasing understanding on the status of lesser known or lesser studied species of wildlife
* Innovative approaches to awareness raising regarding environmental concerns
* Demonstrating individual or collective action towards conservation outcomes

Applicants must demonstrate a mature breadth and depth of knowledge on the area of environmental conservation and the particular geographical area or issue that they wish to contribute to through their project. The duration of the project should be between 6 to 12 months and the scale of the project should be such that funding awarded covers the total or the majority of the requirements.

Funds will be provided to the successful individual in a phased manner – 50% on acceptance, 30% on a successful mid-term review and 20% on approval of a satisfactory final report submitted by the project leader on or near the completion of the project. The final reports should also include a full financial report on expenditures made as part of the project. Acknowledgement of support provided by WWF should be mentioned on related publications or communications.

CRITERIA
Proposals meeting some or all of the following criteria will receive priority consideration:

* Contribute to WWF’s mission of conservation. Priority will be given to initiatives located in WWF India’s priority landscapes or geographies (see www.wwfindia.org)
* Achieve a clear outcome within the project timeframe that can be scaled up or replicated
* Encourage participatory or community-based conservation and natural resource management
* Introduce innovative approaches that can demonstrate conservation impact
* Have a clearly articulated rationale that demonstrates urgency and need for the work

Funds should be utilized primarily for field activities and not administrative expenditures or capital assets

The program does not support the following types of activities:

* Cash payments for direct budgetary support to an organization.
* Payment for ongoing projects and for expenses of recurring nature.
* Organization of seminars, meetings and conferences, except where it can be demonstrated that the organization of such a meeting is critical to achieving the larger objectives of this grant
* Sponsorship to attend conferences, workshops, training programs in India or abroad.
* Large scale construction, and high capital costs
* Purchase of vehicles

APPLICATION PROCESS
All grants are considered for funding on a competitive merit basis. A screening committee at WWF-India will evaluate the selection of grantees based on the above mentioned criteria along with the technical strength of the applicant to ensure a successful and sustainable project.

Applications will be reviewed internally by the Small Grant manager and a wider team of experts within WWF India. Finalists will be interviewed by the team, who will also help fine-tune and lend resources toward the project, where appropriate, such that its direction and conclusions are clearly focused.

Applications will be reviewed and grants provided twice a year: in June and in December. The deadline for receiving the first round of applications is 15 June 2010. Please submit your proposals in the format below to sgp@wwfindia.net or to

The Small Grants Programme Coordinator,
WWF India, 172-B
Lodi Estate,
New Delhi 110003.

The decision of the WWF team reviewing the applications will be final. In some cases, where there are exceptional reasons for initiating work immediately, the review committee may decide to offer a grant on a discretionary basis.

FORMAT
To be considered for a Small Grant, interested candidates must submit the following documents:

* a completed project proposal
* a current curriculum vitae
* at least two professional references

The proposals should follow the format provided as download and should be limited to four pages excluding maps or photographs that are considered essential for a complete appraisal of the project.

Looking for a job with a think tank or an NGO

From: Rimi

Hello Chandni,

I am graduating this coming summer with a masters in Economic Anthropology. I'm looking for employment in India. All my research and training is in the field of development in the developing world (I specialise in relational qualitative analysis of socioeconomic institutions and developing the most effective modus operandi from that), and now I'm looking to work with NGOs/think tanks which work in the same field, in a research or administrative position.

Chandni, I'll be doing a book project in Calcutta for a year or so, but I'm free to move before that or even during, if a tempting enough job opens up elsewhere. Also, I'm as keen on think tanks (Centres for Communications and Development, for example, or Centre for Policy Research) as I am on NGOs, so if you're connected to them as well, keep me in mind :-)

Best wishes,

Rimi

*How can you help?***

We need volunteers willing to invest time and effort in our children. You can help:

- *Teach (revision of schoolroom lessons, story-telling, art, craft, games, etc) *
- Regularly interact with parents (we hope to help the parents understand the significance of education and healthier lives for the children)
- Provide vocational training for teenagers
- By becoming an occasional volunteer (helping us accompany children on picnics or helping out at medical check-ups, etc)
- Raise funds (you could either make a donation yourself or help by selling old newspapers, soliciting donations, etc)
- Conduct collection drives (for school stationery, toys, old clothes for the children)
- Write for our website (our blogs need to be updated frequently to ensure that activities that we conduct are publicised; so, if you think writing is more in your line, you could help us update our blog.)

LEAD runs on the determination and perseverance of a few. Which is why we have come to believe that all we need is committed volunteers and the rest will follow. More than anything, we would like to add to this family of friends who have come together for something they believe in. So, even if you think none of the above options work for you, but you would like to be associated with LEAD, give us a call and we can discuss what would best suit you. We look forward to hearing from you.

Call Rupesh at 9594020304, Chaitra 9987773048 or Kailash 9892416496

Latest NGOs News

Jaipur NGO holds limb fitment camp in Iraq

JAIPUR: A 22-member team of a Jaipur-based NGO that provides artificial limbs to the disabled has returned from Baghdad after holding a month-long artificial limb fitment camp there.

The Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayta Samiti (BMVSS) provided 882 Iraqis artificial limbs during the camp while 75 people were given crutches free of cost.

The founder-chief patron of BMVSS DR Mehta led the team. Two technicians were from Pakistan where BMVSS is also running a rehabilitation centre. The team returned to Jaipur earlier this week.

The camp was organised in association with a charitable body of Baghdad's Abdul Hadi Chalabi Foundation.

"In all, 882 persons were equipped with artificial limbs of whom 42 were provided artificial limbs on both their legs," Mehta said.

Mehta said the Iraqi amputees accepted and adopted the 'Jaipur Foot and the Stanford Jaipur Knee' artificial limbs because of its simple technology and its light weight. The 'Stanford Jaipur Knee' was developed by the engineering students of the prestigious US Stanford University in association with BMVSS.

Mehta said there are about 50,000 amputees in Iraq who had lost their limbs in the wars and also because of terrorist attacks, diabetes and because of various road accidents.

Mehta said Chalabi Foundation was keen to run the camp round the year to enable more people to benefit.

"We at BMVSS suggested that a few technicians from Iraq should be sent to Jaipur for training in our centre here," he said.

The BMVSS, Mehta said, would set up the centre in association with Chalabi Foundation.

He also urged the central government to bear the cost of training the Iraqi technicians. He said the camp would go a long way in strengthening India-Iraq ties.

Jaipur court reserves ruling on complaint against Lalit Modi in Haveli case

Jaipur: A city court today reserved its ruling on a criminal complaint seeking police investigation into the alleged fraudulent purchase of heritage 'havelis' of Amber by Lailt Modi, who is embroiled in the IPL controversy.

The court heard both the counsel for the complainant and Modi and his wife Minal, who were named along with seven others in the complaint by NGO Nagrik Morcha which was filed on April 23.

Modi's counsel argued that the anti-corruption bureau of the state had investigated the matter and filed an FIR but all investigations have already been stayed by the Rajasthan high court.

As the entire matter is already under the scanner of the high court, no fresh FIR in the same matter can be entertained, the counsel argued.

The complainant Sandeep Bhatra, district president of the NGO, alleged that that the havelis or mansions situated near the Amber fort form part of the protected area and are government properties but Modi and his wife managed to purchase them through a bogus company Heritage City Construction Pvt. Ltd. in 2007 and later became its directors.

"There is no such company existing at Sanaganer on the site which has been shown to be the registered office of the company," he said.

After hearing both the the sides, the court reserved the judgement on the issue.

NGO urges Hajj Hassan to look into botched parrot-smuggling operation

BEIRUT: Lebanon should investigate how smugglers were able to transport hundreds of endangered parrots to Bulgaria last week, animal-welfare campaigners said Monday.

In a letter addressed to Agriculture Minister Hussein al-Hajj Hassan, the non-governmental organization (NGO) Animals Lebanon warned the shipment suggested Lebanon was being used as a “hub” for the smuggling of endangered wildlife.

Bulgarian customs officials at Sofia airport seized an illegal shipment of 108 grey parrots on Friday. The African grey parrots, one of which died during the journey, are considered “near threatened” species and are restricted from trade by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).

The birds, which could have fetched up to $266,735 on the European black market, were shipped to Sofia by a Bulgarian man of Lebanese origin lacking the necessary paperwork, according to a statement from the customs agency. “Officials in the cargo department confirm seeing the parrots and state they witnessed an argument between the owner of the animals and the customs officials,” Animals Lebanon said in the letter, seen by The Daily Star.

The organization added that the seizure was a “serious violation of CITES,” and voiced alarm at the inhumane crates used to transport the parrots. It remains unclear which airline brought the parrots, which have been temporarily housed in Sofia Zoo, to Bulgaria. The NGO called on Hajj Hassan to launch a probe into the botched smuggling operation and to take steps “to prevent these cases from happening again.”

Other than a law fining those who intentionally harm animals up to $15, Lebanon has practically no conservation or animal-welfare legislation. Elephants, big cats and chimpanzees are just some of the endangered species that have been found smuggled in and out of the country. “The shipment of these parrots further highlights the likelihood that Lebanon is being used as a hub for wildlife smuggling,” said Lana Al-Khalil, president of Animals Lebanon. Last year, the NGO documented several cases of parrots being transported out of Rafiq Hariri International Airport, on one occasion finding dead animals in crates.

But Lebanon does appear to be moving toward enacting greater conservation legislation.

Last month, Hajj Hassan traveled to Qatar to discuss with CITES secretary general Willem Wijnstekers the possibility of signing up to the convention. Lebanon and Bahrain are the only Arab states that have not yet signed the 1975 deal.

Nigeria: NGO to Drag 11 PDP Members of Edo Assembly to Court

Benin — Activists for Good Governance, a non-governmental organisation, has concluded plans to drag the 11 members of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Edo State House of Assembly to court over alleged refusal to attend sittings in the past two months, following the controversial removal of the former Speaker, Zakawanu Garuba.

It would be recalled that the 13 members of Action Congress, AC, in the state House of Assembly impeached Garuba and installed Mr. Bright Omokhodion as the new speaker after they claimed that 16 lawmakers signed the impeachment of the ex-speaker.

Ever since the incident, the 11 PDP lawmakers absented themselves from sittings and relocated to Abuja after raising an alarm that their lives were being threatened in the state.

However, leader of the NGO, Mr Morris Ovia, who briefed newsmen, yesterday, in Benin City, condemned the continued absence of the lawmakers from proceedings, despite the fact that they were being paid with tax payers' money.

Ovia, who incidentally is aspiring to represent Ovia South-West Constituency in the House of Assembly under the platform of AC, recalled that with his experience as a former aide to the former Deputy Senate President, Ibrahim Mantu, and Mr Ehioge West-Idahosa, who has represen-ted his constituency for the past twelve years, the action of the 11 lawmakers was illegal and an attempt to cause anarchy in the state.

His words: "We have resolved to go to court to challenge the 11 PDP legislators who have refused to resume duties because they have exceeded the number of days they are supposed to stay away.

"If they are not interested in coming back to work, they should leave so that their various constituencies will bring in fresh people who will represent them. This is not the first time a speaker has been impeached and unfortunately, the PDP is very good in impeaching themselves from history in this state.

"It is not because you feel you are no longer in power that you will now decide to make the state ungover-nable. We will resist such actions and because we are law-abiding citizens, the best way we can seek for peace is for some of us to go to court to challenge their continued absence because they are being paid their salaries through tax payers' money.

"We will not continue to keep quite. When we elect our lawmakers, they are not elected speakers or principal officers. So why will they want to stay away because the leadership has changed?"

He said when the PDP was in charge, AC members were attending proceedings, wondering why the PDP members were feeling a huge sense of loss. "Their action is unacceptable and we want the court to declare their seats vacant so that we can move forward," he added.

Edo state is bigger than any group or individual and we must all learn to pursue the collective interest of our people and not our political interest," he said.

NGO starts HIV project in project

THE African Centre for the Constructive Resolution of Disputes, has launched a 12-month HIV and reproductive health project.

The focal person, Jacinta Akwero, said the project would be carried out in Awach and Layibi sub-counties.

Opening a one-day workshop at their offices in Layibi division, Akwero said they would focus on the youth who dropped out of school.

This followed a research that revealed that school drop-outs have less chances of getting information on HIV and sexual reproductive health. The research was carried out by Comas Onen, a Makerere University researcher.

Tragedy at Kalutara – Need to get organized and campaign for Human rights for all

It was a shocking story of a young mother allegedly trying to kill her son of two and a half years by throwing him into a river, as she could not support the boy. This shows the level of poverty in Sri Lanka and the inability of some citizens to cope with a free market economy. The Tamils have NGO’s, Indians, rich relatives and GOSL helping them. At least they have refugee camps, where they are provided with food, water and shelter. I myself have seen old and disabled people begging in the streets of Colombo and nowhere to go, or no one taking care of them. This is indeed sad and shocking to see people suffering in this manner. Clearly there is a need to protect the human rights of all citizens, not just that of Tamils. There are lessons that we can learn such as networking and campaigning , from Tamils [1]

It is time for those who are in a position to help others, to actually do something practical to help poor citizens, irrespective of ethnicity or beliefs. We should not be indifferent when fellow humans suffer any where in the world. There is a need for well organised groups, that develop community spirit amongst themselves, arrange get togethers, events, meetings outings etc that encourage bonding and communication. This will help to develop a community spirit to help each other in difficult times.

What could be done is to provide training and skills [2] so that the weakest and the poorest people can survive. If this is not possible, then these unfortunate people should be provided with basic food water and shelter. This is where Sri Lanka, a Buddhist country, religious organizations and individuals can help. It is hoped that some who read this article can get themselves organized and take practical measures to help the poor. These orgs or individuals can even approach GOSL, such as the ministry of Social services or Human rights for help.

It is also known that children of dead soldiers are living in extreme poverty. It is the duty of the nation to care for welfare of the children of dead soldiers. Further, shocking news is that people living in border villages such as the Abbassa Village are facing extreme poverty ref: http://www.infolanka.com/news/IL/1348.htm

After thirty years in the grip of Tamil Tiger terrorism, these farmer families have forgotten how to lead a normal life, and is in need of counselling and training. The cases mentioned above need immediate attention of the social services department of GOSL.

I wish to thank Shanika SRIYANANDA and Lankaweb for highlighting the tragedy.

16 year old head master on a mission to educate underprivilaged children

Around the world millions of children are not getting a proper education
because their families are too poor to afford to send them to school. In India, one schoolboy is trying change that. In the first report in the BBC's Hunger to Learn series, Damian Grammaticas meets Babar Ali, whose remarkable education project is transforming the lives of hundreds of poor children.

At 16 years old, Babar Ali must be the youngest headmaster in the world.
He's a teenager who is in charge of teaching hundreds of students in his
family's backyard, where he runs classes for poor children from his village.

The story of this young man from Murshidabad in West Bengal is a remarkable
tale of the desire to learn amid the direst poverty.

Babar Ali's day starts early. He wakes, pitches in with the household
chores, then jumps on an auto-rickshaw which takes him part of the 10km (six
mile) ride to the Raj Govinda school. The last couple of kilometres he has to
walk.

The school is the best in this part of West Bengal. There are hundreds of
students, boys and girls. The classrooms are neat, if bare. But there are
desks, chairs, a blackboard, and the teachers are all dedicated and well-qualified.

As the class 12 roll-call is taken, Babar Ali is seated in the middle in the
front row. He's a tall, slim, gangly teenager, studious and smart in his
blue and white uniform. He takes his notes carefully. He is the model student.

Babar Ali is the first member of his family ever to get a proper education.

"It's not easy for me to come to school because I live so far away," he
says, "but the teachers are good and I love learning. And my parents believe
I must get the best education possible that's why I am here."

Raj Govinda school is government-run so it is free, all Babar Ali has to pay
for is his uniform, his books and the rickshaw ride to get there. But still
that means his family has to find around 1,800 rupees a year ($40, ?25) to
send him to school. In this part of West Bengal that is a lot of money. Many
poor families simply can't afford to send their children to school, even
when it is free.

Chumki Hajra is one who has never been to school. She is 14 years old and
lives in a tiny shack with her grandmother. Their home is simple A-frame
supporting a thatched roof next to the rice paddies and coconut palms at the edge of
the village. Inside the hut there is just room for a bed and a few
possessions.

Every morning, instead of going to school, she scrubs the dishes and cleans
the homes of her neighbours. She's done this ever since she was five. For
her work she earns just 200 rupees a month ($5, ?3). It's not much, but it's
money her family desperately needs. And it means that she has to work as a
servant everyday in the village.

"My father is handicapped and can't work," Chumki tells me as she scrubs a
pot. "We need the money. If I don't work, we can't survive as a family. So I
have no choice but to do this job."

But Chumki is now getting an education, thanks to Babar Ali. The 16-year-old
has made it his mission to help Chumki and hundreds of other poor children
in his village. The minute his lessons are over at Raj Govinda school, Babar
Ali doesn't stop to play, he heads off to share what he's learnt with other
children from his village.

At four o'clock every afternoon after Babar Ali gets back to his family home
a bell summons children to his house. They flood through the gate into the
yard behind his house, where Babar Ali now acts as headmaster of his own,
unofficial school.

Lined up in his back yard the children sing the national anthem. Standing on
a podium, Babar Ali lectures them about discipline, then study begins.

Babar Ali gives lessons just the way he has heard them from his teachers.
Some children are seated in the mud, others on rickety benches under a
rough, homemade shelter. The family chickens scratch around nearby. In every corner
of the yard are groups of children studying hard.

Babar Ali was just nine when he began teaching a few friends as a game. They
were all eager to know what he learnt in school every morning and he liked
playing at being their teacher.

Now his afternoon school has 800 students, all from poor families, all
taught for free. Most of the girls come here after working, like Chumki, as
domestic helps in the village, and the boys after they have finished their day's work labouring in the fields.

"In the beginning I was just play-acting, teaching my friends," Babar Ali
says, "but then I realised these children will never learn to read and write
if they don't have proper lessons. It's my duty to educate them, to help our
country build a better future."

Including Babar Ali there are now 10 teachers at the school, all, like him
are students at school or college, who give their time voluntarily. Babar
Ali doesn't charge for anything, even books and food are given free, funded by
donations. It means even the poorest can come here.

"Our area is economically deprived," he says. "Without this school many kids
wouldn't get an education, they'd never even be literate."

Seated on a rough bench squeezed in with about a dozen other girls, Chumki
Hajra is busy scribbling notes.

Her dedication to learning is incredible to see. Every day she works in
homes in the village from six in the morning until half past two in the
afternoon, then she heads to Babar Ali's school. At seven every evening she heads back to do more cleaning work.

Chumki's dream is to one day become a nurse, and Babar Ali's classes might
just make it possible.

The school has been recognised by the local authorities, it has helped
increase literacy rates in the area, and Babar Ali has won awards for his
work.

The youngest children are just four or five, and they are all squeezed in to
a tiny veranda. There are just a couple of bare electric bulbs to give light
as lessons stretch into the evening, and only if there is electricity.

And then the monsoon rain begins. Huge drops fall as the children scurry for
cover, slipping in the mud. They crowd under a piece of plastic sheeting.
Babar Ali shouts an order. Lessons are cancelled for the afternoon otherwise
everyone will be soaked. Having no classrooms means lessons are at the mercy
of the elements.

The children climb onto the porch of a nearby shop as the rain pours down.
Then they hurry home through the downpour. Tomorrow they'll be back though.
Eight hundred poor children, unable to afford an education, but hungry for
anything they can learn at Babar Ali's school.

When Babar can teach hundreds of students in spite of so many ods, can't we teach or facilitate somebody's education which can transform their lives?

Year of Giving - 365 Stories of Personal Giving

From http://yearofgiving.wordpress.com

The Year of Giving started officially on Tuesday, December 15, 2009 at 3:30 pm. The concept is simple. I will give $10 to a different person every day for a year. I will write about the people who I intersect with as well as the truly altruistic experience that I am sure to have!

I recently lost my job at a nonprofit organization due to the economic climate so taking on this endeavor may not seem fiscally prudent. However, I think it is exactly these times that we must focus on helping others.

My goal is not to change the lives of those with whom I come in contact. Let’s face it, $10 dollars is not going to change someone’s life in and of itself. I do believe, however, that the act of giving will hopefully inspire others to pursue the ideals that the French philosopher Auguste Comte envisioned when he coined the term “altruism.” Whether that comes in the form of someone who reads this blog and wants to embark on their own Year of Giving or someone who uses the $10 to help someone else out, the specific results are less important than the overall good that we can achieve together.

Training Program on Open Source GIS at IIT Madras

IIT Madras in collaboration with kCube, Chennai is organizing a five day Training Program on Open Source GIS – Quantum GIS.

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have become a tool with widespread use in developmental applications. The power of a GIS can have a positive influence in community based planning and scientific decision making for developmental activities. However, the life-cycle cost of commercial GIS packages and the ever changing hardware requirements to support these packages make the economics of implementation difficult. Until recently open-source GIS packages did not have the capabilities and user friendliness of commercial packages. Recent developments by the open-source community has resulted in the development of Quantum GIS which is totally free with high quality GIS features. This training program in Quantum GIS isorganized to introduce GIS users to the powerful features of this open source package. The program is focused on training users such as NGO’s, government departments, private organizations, academicians who use GIS for developmental applications.

Program Name : Open Source GIS - Quantum GIS – 5 Day Training Program

Program Duration : May 17th – 21st 2010 (Monday – Friday)

Seeking NGO Partnership to Hold a Fundraising Music Concert

This is a great opportunity for NGOs, especially those working on the education of children in rural areas, to raise some funds and support children's education at the same time.

Excerpts:

Youthrise is a non-profit youth-led activist group committed to bringing about positive change in our societies through a participatory, grassroots level approach. We now have members across 47 cities in India and have gained much popularity after MTV's popular youth based show, ‘Wassup’that called us for one of their segments.

The benefits of supporting us through this venture would be:

* A percentage of the money raised will be donated to the NGO for your projects.

* With the money raised through the concert, we wish to support the education of poor children from rural backgrounds, etc.

We would like to have the concert on the 9th of July from 6 to 10pm.We would be expecting a crowd of around 1000 people and also hope to have several celebrities and a few renowned musicians who we are still contacting. We will also be availing the support of media such as television, newspapers and radio stations in order to publicize and popularize the event.

We sincerely hope an NGO will consider our request and help us to make this concert a success.

Job Vacancies at Muktangan

Want to see a transformation in the Education sector?

Here's your opportunity to be part of it!

Introduction

Muktangan, an initiative of Paragon Charitable Trust, is a pioneering educational programme with an innovative model, working in close partnership with the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) and a number of NGOs across the country.

Muktangan, has pioneered the Whole School-Based approach in the urban sector by developing a model that incorporates all the various aspects of quality education: the classroom environment , the curriculum and content, the
teacher (whom we train from the community members) as a facilitator and the
student as an active learner.

Muktangan was founded by Elizabeth Mehta based on her vast experience of four decades both in the formal school system and with a professional development organization working in several States across the country, in both urban and rural settings. It was her understanding both of the needs of the sector, and the larger vision of inclusion that led her to develop an approach that was child-centered and unique. Muktangan which began as a pilot balwadi now spans seven Municipal schools with its own integrated teacher training program, and has impacted several other implementing organizations through an outreach programme.
