Amravati NGO creates model for tiger buffers

NAGPUR: The Nature Conservation Society, Amravati (NCSA), an NGO engaged in wildlife conservation in Central India, has created a model for the development of buffer villages in tiger reserves.

At a time when respective state governments are hesitating to notify buffer zones for tiger reserves due to confusion among villagers and politicians, the NCSA has actually created a model to explain the development plan for villages in the buffer. The NCSA model has been set up on a 20-acre private land on the outskirts of Melghat Tiger Reserve in Amravati district. Known as ‘Muthawa’ Community Resource Centre (MCRC), it has now become a resource centre for communities living in the buffer of the tiger reserve. Muthawa is the name of God for Korku tribals. The 20-acre area has regenerated 60 indigenous plant species of Melghat reserve. There are 3,000 standing trees on this plot of 20 feet. “We did nothing but simply provided protection to this area,” said Kishor Rithe, one of the architects of MCRC. Birds responded well to this protection. Quails, partridges and around 20 local species of birds started nesting in this area. “Their three generations now have started pest controlling in the organic farming plot,” he added.

“It took four years to create a model of activities to be carried out in the buffer villages of the tiger reserve. The NCSA is busy creating trainers who will go to villages in the buffer of any tiger reserve with the conservation and livelihood agenda for tribals,” claimed Nishikant Kale, president of NCSA. The centre grows jowar, rice, udad and vegetables like brinjals, chilli, tomato and turmeric as first crop and gram as the second crop. Focus has been given on agroforestry and horticulture. “We’ve planted forest produce like charoli, amla, bamboo, mahua and sagargoti which can give us forest produce and fruits like mango, orange, tamarind, citrus, papaya, banana, karvanda, drumstick, guava and custard apple as fruits.

There are 500 trees of these varieties. To support this kind of pesticide-free agriculture a strong natural pest controlling mechanism has been created within the centre. The centre produces manure from urine, agricultural waste and composting. A unique nursery grows saplings based on the agro-forestry model in tribal villages.

“To explain eco-tourism in buffer specially benefiting the locals, we have created a wildlife habitat within the campus. Many wild animals have started visiting waterholes and the meadow in the centre,” says Rithe.

“Many leading organisations, government departments, banks, micro finance institutes, university departments and research organisations are visiting the centre and have started many programmes with our collaboration in their own areas,” Kale said.

NGO flash strike hits RTA services

HYDERABAD: A flash strike by some NGO unions on Tuesday paralysed services at regional transport authority’s (RTA) offices across the city putting thousands of citizens to inconvenience.

Due to the strike, all the 11 RTA offices in Hyderabad and Ranga Reddy districts stopped functioning and notices were put up announcing that the online slots allocated for various services on Tuesday would be rescheduled.

Hundreds of people thronged the Khairatabad RTA office and returned disappointed. Some applicants said registration certificate (RC) and permanent licence issuing mechanism at Khairatabad was hit, putting them to a lot of trouble. After the launch of the three-tier-system web-enabled services (WES) in RTA, smart cards of vehicle RC, permanent driving licence and duplicates for 11 RTA offices in Hyderabad and Ranga Reddy were being printed and dispatched from Khairatabad RTA office.

According to officials, any given day, about 2,500 receipts pertaining to printing of smart cards (RCs, driving licences) reach Khairatabad but the existing printing capacity is just 1,000.

According to sources, the number of pending RCs, driving licences cross 50,000 causing inconvenience to a lot of people. "I cleared driving test almost two months ago. At Nagole test track, officials said that within a week I will get my licence by speed post. However, even after two months, I am yet to get it," Ch Vamsi, an executive with Moldtechindia, said.

Vamsi apparently had to pay challan twice when traffic police caught him for not having a driving licence. Similar was the experience of M Venu, a software engineer. Venu bought a car two months ago, applied for a permanent registration and is yet to get an RC.

When contacted, Mamta Prasad, deputy transport commissioner, Ranga Reddy, who is also in-charge for Hyderabad, said there has been a problem with issuing of licences and RCs and they are trying to rectify it.

"Due to upgradation of the system, there have been some problems which resulted in the delay of smart cards printing. We are increasing the number of printers and upgrading the system. Within a week, the problem will be rectified," she added.

NGO demands chemical emergency plan under RTI

VADODARA: Concerned over the recent fire in the backyard of Gujarat Refinery, a city-based environment activist Rohit Prajapati on Saturday filed a Right to Information (RTI) application demanding to know whether the Gujarat State Disaster Management Authority (GSDMA) has any emergency plans to fight chemical disasters in the state. Prajapati has asked the authorities to reply within 48 hours as it is an important issue and GSDMA's website doesn't have any information on it.

"I have demanded elaborate details from GSDMA as I feel that there is no effort from the government's side to prevent chemical disasters. Gujarat has large number of chemical industries, many of which deal with hazardous chemicals. I want to know whether the government is prepared to tackle any disaster, especially during monsoons," Prajapati told TOI.

"We shouldn't forget what happened in Bhopal. There are many risks associated with the use, storage, processing and handling of these chemicals. But, many times industries deny sharing such information. The eight solid waste sites and 25 common effluent treatment plants in Gujarat are open like cricket grounds," Prajapati added.

Under RTI, Prajapati has demanded a copy of chemical emergency plan for each industrial cluster of Gujarat particularly for rainy season, names of chemical industries in the state, their products, details of hazardous waste and effluent generated, its impact on environment, health of workers and communities around.

He had demanded similar information in 2007. The state government had then replied saying that it didn't have any chemical emergency plans and was in the process of making one. "If I don't get reply within 48 hours, I will approach Gujarat Information Commission (GIC). It is high time that the government shares its disaster management plans," Prajapati said.

"Lot of hazardous chemicals flow out along with rainwater during monsoons every year from the chemical industries in and around Vadodara. Same is the case with industries in other cities. The lake near Gujarat Refinery had also got polluted owing to the dumped oil products," Prajapati said.

WOMEN OF NO IMPORTANCE

The ordeal suffered by a modern, urban woman when her maid quits the job is nerve-wracking. And if this woman happens to be a professional with a family to look after — which means being on time with her husband’s breakfast, getting her two children ready for school, operating the washing machine and cooking lunch at the same time while getting ready for work herself, all within an hour-and-a-half — the tragedy of losing the maid assumes epic proportions. Behind every successful woman there is always another woman, indispensable in daily life but quite invisible. Without these ‘other’ women, the engine of a household would grind to a halt. Yet, the value accorded to domestic workers and their labour is extremely low in Indian society — this includes the educated, the erudite and the intellectual, who take pride in being all for human rights and the empowerment of the underprivileged.

So far, the government and polite society have conveniently ignored the fact that domestic workers are professionals too, and they deserve workers’ rights. Only recently has the Centre woken up to the domestic labourers’ plight, nudged repeatedly by non-governmental organizations and activists, and has introduced a draft policy that attempts to provide domestic workers with basic rights such as a weekly day off, minimum wages, fixed working hours and employment contracts.

While the Centre basks in the glory of its achievement, perhaps it should also reflect a bit on what is still left to be done. At present, it does not have a clear idea about the number of domestic workers and the conditions they work in. The draft policy recommends a safe working environment, but to make that happen one must first find out what the current environment is like. An NGO working for the welfare of domestic workers says that 70 per cent of the workers are women, and many of them children, who are often victims of trafficking. The draft policy intends to give these women their basic rights as workers, but what about their rights as women and as human beings? Even as professionals, the law against sexual harassment at the workplace should protect them.

Sexual abuse of domestic workers is keenly discussed and debated, but it is an area that still remains in considerable darkness. All we have are speculations, but no consolidated effort on the part of the government to find out the exact facts and figures. The little research that has been conducted independently on this subject suggests that domestic workers are among the most vulnerable sections of the country’s workforce. The ‘civilized’ elite often exploits them not just monetarily but also sexually. The incidents are generally hushed up. In most cases, not even a formal complaint is lodged, and so, the question of justice or punishment does not arise.

Tantalizing accounts of sexual exploitation of ‘maid servants’ have so far made up the material of short stories, sometimes novels, sometimes television soaps, and, mostly, erotic jokes and pornographic narratives. Once in a while, cases such as the Shiney Ahuja debacle give us a peek into this dark corridor of muffled cries. But in general it is all hearsay, nothing that is taken beyond a coffee-table conversation.

According to a member of the task force that is helping the government set up policies for domestic workers, there have been thousands of cases of physical and sexual abuse against women who work in households for pay. The government has failed to do anything about it as there is “no mechanism to track and monitor”.

Before one sighs and dismisses the inaction of the government as another example of its usual callous and complaisant nature, it may be worthwhile to wonder if there are other reasons behind its reluctance to go deeper into this issue. In 2007, a law had been proposed to protect women from sexual harassment at the workplace, and it had included domestic labourers. In May this year, there has been a last-minute change to this proposed legislation which is soon to be placed before the cabinet. The women and child development ministry has withdrawn protection from sexual harassment to domestic workers from the ambit of this long-pending proposal, citing a really curious reason — reportedly, the law ministry has argued that implementing the law “inside people’s homes” may prove too hard. It would have been truly enlightening if the law ministry had cared to explain what the difficulty exactly is. Does it mean to say that sexual crimes are not committed inside people’s homes? Or is it suggesting that sexual abuse which takes place inside people’s homes should not come under the scope of the law?

To neglect or forget is one thing, but to consciously deny is quite something else. And when the logic behind the denial borders on absurdity, it is time to wonder what the unsaid realities are. The home, the sacred seat of the institution called family, must always remain unscathed, immune to any accusation. Even when questioning its integrity becomes absolutely unavoidable, such questioning must be for a reason far more weighty than just the abuse of those ‘menial’ women who sweep the floor. Men will be men, once in a while they will ogle at the maid; some naughty teenage boy will grab the maid’s breasts when he wants to taste a female body without too much fuss. These women need the jobs, they will not open their mouths too easily. After all, they are ‘lowly’ beings, coming mostly from the backward sections of society. They will find it hard to accuse, harder to prove, and even harder to get another job. And, above all, the home (I repeat) is sacred. What happens there, stays there.

Honour is a funny word. It is amazing how its meaning changes with the identities of individuals or groups, both in the eyes of society and the law. The honour of the Indian family often lies in covering up the exploitations perpetrated by it. The difficulty of implementing sexual harassment laws inside a home has its roots in an age-old mindset that strives to protect the image of ‘the home’ more than its inhabitants. What this mindset disregards, deliberately, is the fact that this ‘home’ is the workplace for a domestic worker. She is vulnerable there, as a female employee is vulnerable to sexual advances from employers or male colleagues. While the law protects the employees in an office, the domestic worker is protected neither by the law nor by society. Her vulnerability is intensified by the fact that she is poor; she may not be able to afford to protest and lose her job.

If it is to be believed that our country is indeed democratic, there is no reason why the law should hesitate to enter people’s households. Then again, it is selective in its hesitation. It does not show any reluctance to invade households when it comes to domestic violence or dowry deaths. But while dealing with the abuse of ‘maids’, it stops and reconsiders whether it is worth wasting its time on those expendable creatures.

Make inquiry report public: NGO

VADODARA: Concerned over the fire that erupted in the backyard of Gujarat Refinery three days ago, Paryavaran Suraksha Samiti (PSS), a city-based NGO working for environmental cause, has demanded that the inquiry report that is being prepared should be made public by IndianOil Corporation Ltd (IOCL). PSS activists said that several such inquiries were done in past accidents that happened in IOCL, but none of them was made public.

Another people's body, Jaago Vadodara Jaago, too, has demanded action against those responsible for the dumping and subsequent fire. "Since 1995, there have been number of accidents in IOCL in which many people lost their lives. Inquires were ordered into such incidents, but none of them was made public. People should know what came out in the inquiries and who is responsible for such accidents," said Rohit Prajapati of PSS.

"Gujarat Refinery is located right outside the city and any accident in this petrochemical company spreads panic among citizens. The company is answerable to the citizens. At least, NGOs like us who work for environment and eminent citizens should be apprised of actions taken by the company after such accidents occur," Prajapati added.

The NGO has listed accidents that happened in the refinery fire in petrol tank of refinery in 1995 in which one person was killed, fire in hydrocracker plant in 1995, fire on refinery premises in 2001 which the company allegedly tried to hide, gas leak in 2002 in which one person died, contract worker died after falling from cleaning tower in 2002, blast in October 2004 in which two people were killed and 16 were injured and oil leakage from refinery that caused damage to a nearby lake in 2005. When we ask what actions were taken after such incidents, we don't get proper replies," said Prajapati.

Narendra Rawat of Jaago Vadodara Jaago said, "Citizens should be educated about steps to be taken in case there is some gas or chemical leakage. The city is surrounded by several chemical units of which many handle hazardous chemicals. If proper steps are not taken on time, then it may lead to dangerous accident some day." The body has written to Gujarat chief minister, Central Pollution Control Board and human rights commission regarding the issue.

NREGA workers paid a pittance in state: NGO

JAIPUR: While Rajasthan may claim to have been best in implementing the employment guarantee scheme but the workers have been getting a pittance.

A report by activists of the Suchna Evum Rozgar Ka Adhikar Abhiyan have brought to light that workers at Krishnagar in the Phalodi gram panchayat of Jodhpur were paid Re 1 as wages in the first fortnight of May. However, when the workers raised a hue and cry their work was re-evaluated and the wages were hiked to Rs 19.

Things were a bit better at the Rora gram panchayat in the Nokha panchayat samity of Bikaner were the workers were given Rs 7. But things came to a pass as the workers refused to accept the payment.

At Nalodi in Karauli the wages paid stood at a paltry Rs 20 which was later hiked after protests to Rs 47. In the capital city of Jaipur, workers at the Palawala Jatan gram panchayat under the Bassi panchayat the wages given stood about 6-7 months back at Rs 14.

“These are just some of the glaring anomalies that have creeped into the scheme. According to the rules, each workers has to be given a real wage of Rs 100 but that has remained in the books. There is no longer any guarantee of this money for workers labouring under this scheme," says Nikhil Dey of the Abhiyan.

At a meeting of NREGA workers it came to light that all workers irrespective of the amount of work that they are doing are being given poor wages when the rules say that the wages should be paid in accordance to the amount of work.

NGO office ransacked

VADODARA: Relatives of a Rajasthan-based girl, who had fled from her home with her friend some days ago, created ruckus at the office of city-based NGO Vikalp and even broke glass panes of its door. Nidhi Jain, 27, fled from her home in Kota with her friend Akanksha in the first week of June and took shelter at Vikalp.

According to the NGO that works for women, Nidhi, working as a lecturer in a college was being coerced into marriage by her family but she wasn't happy with it. "She opposed her family members' decision to arrange her marriage so she fled from her home with her friend Akanksha, 23. Both left together as Nidhi was not comfortable leaving her home alone," said Maya Sharma, who runs the NGO.

"Now, both want to live together independently and don't want to return to their families. But, Nidhi's uncle came to our office on Wednesday and tried to take her away forcibly. So, we had to call the police and seek protection. We are trying to convince the family to let the girls live together," Sharma told TOI. The JP Road police officials met the girls, but no formal complaint was lodged against anyone till Wednesday evening.

Thalassemia

Blood plays an important part in our lives. Especially for the persons who require blood for their survival! Apart from the people who met with accidents, undergone surgeries, or who is in ICU, there are some other people for whom blood is required for every certain time period! Otherwise, there is no hope of ordinary survival.
Even if they had blood transfusion for a number of times, once a failure in the blood availability can decrease their survival rate! The effects of the disease can be in 6 forms - Iron overload, Infections such as hepatitis, Bone deformities, Enlarged spleen, Slowed growth rate and Heart problems. This Genetic Blood Disorder is termed as Thalassemia. This description of the disease you can find in many web sites! But what is more important is the prevention, diagnosis, & cure.

Since it is a genetic disorder, hereditary, the only way of prevention of this disorder is the parents should decide of not giving birth to a child! That sounds alarming! But, to lead a peaceful life even after we know that our child will have a painful disorder for which there is no permanent cure, the decision should be wise! They can adopt a child! The hereditary occurrence will happen, in cases like, where both the parents are Thalassemia Minor carrying people. Then the chances are like - 25% of Thalassemia Major child, 50% of Thalassemia Minor child and 25% of a Normal child.
Next one is diagnosis - to find out that the person is a Thalassemia Major or Thalassemia Minor! Given its affects above, the only requirement for a successful diagnosis is to have their blood tested! In India, where a 4-15% of population are Thalassemia carriers, being one of the major carrier in the world, and a place where most of the people are very far from minimal medical facilities, except for those living in urban areas; it is predominantly essential that NGOs, charities, missionaries and other organizations, last but not least the Government, should take more and more consideration about the people living in rural areas.

Lastly, the cure for disease is blood transfusion for now. Which requires the people who are ready to donate their blood, which is purely voluntary.

Of-course, there are also some medical research progresses in dealing with this Thalassemia, but keeping-in-mind the rural people, there is still a lot to be done, apart from just inventing the cure and making business out of it!

My personal experience, when I was in Hyderabad, I used to donate blood for a baby child carrying this disorder! I did for three times, after every three months, and now she is no more. Because she is just a child and has very low medical facilities as they were not so financially strong. Her father used to give me one day meal taking me to a nice restaurant after the blood transfusion, even though they were not so good financially. I did not even see her face once, her name is Vaishnavi. There are so many similar cases, few in number, what it takes is just the knowledge of it, donating the blood and remembering the rural people!

Because, Thalassemia is just one such kind of disorders, where there are many others like Sickle Cell disorder and many more!

More details can be found at the links and at google.com

Thanks,

UVF,

Tiger conservation forum promises long term sustained commitment

New Delhi: As the meeting of the Global Tiger forum (GTF) opened today, the governments of member Tiger Range Countries and other member countries showed greater desire to give an impetus to tiger conservation and steer the commitment forward.

There are 13 countries worldwide which still have tigers in the wild, although the numbers are very low. Without immediate strong action, the next few years will be catastrophic for wild tigers.

GTF is the only inter-governmental body representing countries that still have wild tigers, and it is responsible for facilitating, coordinating and strengthening these governments’ commitments and actions towards saving tigers in the wild.

The two-day meeting at New Delhi has been convened to focus on developing a new strategy for the GTF, and to provide a platform for learning of conservation approaches across range countries and focussing on issues that can be replicated and scaled up, in efforts to galvanize political will and action to save the iconic species from extinction. Representatives from eight tiger range countries including India, renowned tiger experts from organizations working on the issue, like WTI, WPSI, WII were also present.

“GTF can play a lead role through close collaboration with tiger range countries and other organizations to check international hotspots of tiger trafficking, besides evolving a regional roadmap to strengthen global tiger conservation through respective National Action Plans, said Indian Minister of Environment, Shri Jairam Ramesh in his message. ‘The commitment from Tiger Range Countries is important at this juncture to revitalize and strengthen the forum. I appeal to all Tiger Range Countries for their active participation in this regard”, he added.

Standardizing the methodology of conservation approaches on monitoring and habitat management, increasing law enforcement, linking critical area systems and looking at the issue of habitat fragmentation were the commonalities that emerged from among the initial discussions of the country delegates. The need to realize a sense of urgency and create awareness-raising campaigns, build capacities and tackle transboundary issues were the other pertinent points which will be discussed during the course of this conference.

“Development of a revised strategy for the GTF and a plan on governance and implementation are the two outcomes that will mark the success of this meeting, said HE Shri Deepak Bohara, Chairperson of GTF and Minster for Forests and Soil Conservation, Govt. of Nepal.

WWF-India, an organization that has a long history of initiatives for tiger conservation, dating back to the launch of Project Tiger in 1973, welcomed these new commitments for tiger conservation. “GTF being the only inter-governmental body for Tigers is ideally suited to offer a new paradigm for conserving this species among its range countries. We have no time to lose since the wild tiger population is at it’s tipping point”, said Mr. Ravi Singh, Secretary Genera & CEO, WWF-India. “WWF remains committed to supporting range state governments as they take on this challenging task.”

GTF was started in 1993 by tiger range states as a conduit for those countries to collaborate on a global plan for tiger conservation. Seven tiger range countries (Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Cambodia, Laos, Nepal and Vietnam) are members of the GTF as well as the UK along with some non-governmental organizations, including WWF and TRAFFIC.

Tigers are particularly in the spotlight during this year which also happens to be the ‘Year of the Tiger’ in the Chinese lunar calendar. With possibly as few as 3,200 tigers left in the wild, WWF’s focus is on securing political commitments to double the wild tiger population by the next Year of the Tiger in 2022.

EIDHR Call for Proposals to provide grants to support Human Rights Defenders

The European Instrument for Democracy and Human Rights (EIDHR) is the main financing instrument of the European Union adopted by the European Parliament and the Council for the promotion of democracy and human rights around the world. This instrument works “to contribute to the development and consolidation of democracy and the rule of law as well as to the respect for all human rights and fundamental freedoms, within the framework of the European Union’s policy on development cooperation with third countries and consistently with the EU’s foreign policy as a whole.”

Civil society and NGOs are an important part of EIDHR. The instrument recognizes civil society as an effective force for political reform and defence of human rights. It works directly with NGOs in an independent manner, leading to greater flexibility and improved capacity in implementing projects in various countries for promotion and protection of human rights. EIDHR provides grants to projects implemented by civil society groups at local, national and international level.

In this context, it has now launched a call for proposals for civil society organizations, NGOs, nonprofit entities etc to extend grants funding to them for the support of human rights defenders. This “Support to Human Rights Defenders” call for proposals has been launched for all countries around to world “to contribute to the promotion and protection of human rights anddemocracy through the support to human rights defenders (HRDs)” as part of the EIDHAR Strategy Paper 2007-2010 (under Objective 3).

“Civil society organisations, including non-governmental organisations, independent political foundations, community based organisations, and private sector agencies, institutions and organisations and networks thereof at local, national, regional and international level” are eligible to apply under this call for proposals (they should be directly responsible for implementation of the proposed projects).

The Strategy Paper adopted by the European Commission has specific objectives of enhancing respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms in countries and regions where they are most at risk; strengthening the role of civil society in promoting human rights and democratic reform, supporting the peaceful conciliation of group interests and consolidating political participation and representation; supporting actions on human-rights and democracy issues in areas covered by EU guidelines, including dialogues on human rights, human rights defenders, the death penalty, torture, and children and armed conflict; supporting and strengthening the international and regional frameworks for the protection of human rights, justice, the rule of law and the promotion of democracy; and building confidence in and enhancing the reliability and transparency of democratic electoral processes, in particular through election observation.

Skoll Foundation accepting applications for Skoll Awards for Social Entrepreneurship 2011

The Skoll Foundation has announced that it is now accepting applications for its next round of the Skoll Awards for Social Entrepreneurship. The Awards are an opportunity for organizations led by social entrepreneurs “whose work has the potential for large-scale influence on critical challenges of our time.” ‘Social entrepreneurs’ are those who work for changing the face of business with a strong motivation to improve society and they usually do this by applying innovative and sustainable solutions. A more in-depth definition about this term is provided in the glossary page of Skoll Foundation’s website. Social entrepreneurs who have been working to address the challenges in the areas of tolerance and human rights, health, economic and social equity, peace and security, institutional responsibility, and environmental sustainability can apply for the awards.

Social entrepreneurs applying for the programme should be innovators “who have tested and proved their approach, are poised to replicate or scale up their work to create equilibrium change and engage others with a message that resonates with individuals whose resources are crucial to advancing these solutions.”

Skoll Awards provide grant support to such innovators and their organizations based on certain conditions. Social entrepreneurs can receive what is called later-stage or mezzanine funding, which means a kind of funding for the new organizations that have started its socialentrepreneurship operations by testing their ideas successfully and having documented them with a plan to scale them up as well but have not yet achieved large geographical scale. This is perhaps one of the rare grants funding support offered to new NGOs who have tested their ideas in an innovative manner. However, there will be payment limitations as per the Budget Guidance of the Awards. New ideas that have not been tested are not allowed to apply for the awards.

The grant offered by the Skoll Awards can be used as a core support by the organization “to help organizations expand their programs and capacity to deliver long-term, sustainable equilibrium change.”

The next and final deadline to apply for the awards is 4 August 2010. For more information, visit this link.

USIP’s 2010 Annual Grant Competition for Peacebuilding Projects

The United States Institute of Peace (USIP) supports peacebuilding projects implemented by nonprofit organizations including educational institutions, research institutions and civil society organizations. Under its 2010 Annual Grant Competition, it is currently seeking applications from organizations around the world. Even individuals can apply for funding support under this call. This competition:

*
o supports innovative peacebuilding projects involving research, the identification of promising models and effective practices, the development of practitioner resources and tools, the development and delivery of education, training and dialogue programs, and the production of films, radio programs, and other media.
o funds projects focused on preventing, managing, and resolving violent conflict and promoting post-conflict peacebuilding in settings outside the borders of the U.S. Awards support activities that apply across a broad range of relevant disciplines, skills, and approaches. USIP welcomes proposals of an interdisciplinary or multidisciplinary nature.

Topic areas of interest to USIP include, but are not limited to:

* Conflict analysis and prevention;
* Mediation and conflict resolution;
* Postconflict peace and stability operations;
* Religion and peacemaking;
* Women and girls in conflict and peacebuilding;
* Rule of law and transitional justice;
* Economies and conflict;
* Social, psychological, and physical impacts of war and conflict;
* Media and conflict.

Nonprofit organizations such as “institutions of post-secondary, community, and secondary education; public and private education, training or research institutions, and libraries” in the US and other parts of the world can apply for this funding opportunity. While applying, they should present the proof of nonprofit status in their country. The grant competition allows individuals to apply for the grant. However, they should identify a nonprofit organization through which the grants will be managed. “When applicants are employed by an eligible institution, such as a college or university, USIP requires that grants be made to the institution rather than to the individual.”

All applications submitted will be examined initially by the USIP staff, followed by in most cases an external peer review and then further consideration of the panels’ recommendation by USIP’s executivie officers. “USIP does not take positions on policy issues pending before Congress, the executive branch, or other domestic or international bodies, and does not fund “Track 1″ (official) mediation of international disputes. USIP will not fund grant proposals of a partisan political nature or proposals that would inject the grantee or USIP into the policy processes of the United States government or any foreign government or international organization. In addition, in accord with the United States Institute of Peace Act, Section 1709(b), USIP will not use political tests or political qualifications in selecting or monitoring any grantee. Projects that lead to policy recommendations for governments, international organizations, or nongovernmental organizations are welcome, even encouraged, although such recommendations will be those of the grantee and not USIP.”

Grants can be requested for a period of 1-2 years and grants are available between $40,000 and $120,000. “Proposed grant budgets are reviewed by USIP staff, and are subject to modification.”

Applications can be submitted online. The deadline for submissions is 1 October 2010. For more information, visit this link.

Salman Khan: Living up to the name of his NGO, he’s ‘Being Human’ now

The ‘Maine Pyar Kiya ‘ star has always been deeply involved in philanthropy, however sadly in the past he was more in news for his controversies and affairs , than for being a Good Samaritan that he is . But since the 44 year old actor formally launched his NGO, Being Human, his charitable efforts have caught the public eye and have helped him shadowed his otherwise contentious past .

On the reason behind the name of his NGO, this successful Bollywood actor had said, Being human for me is…being human. We all are human beings and I think we don’t do anything human to be human so you have to do something. I mean God gives you so much and you know eventually you need to start giving it back. Everyone does that, I’m sure, in some way or the other but I wanted to start this on my own for a long time now. But I just couldn’t find the time and I’m more inclined to this now.
And Being Human he is, he’s worked extensively for cancer and AIDS patients and underprivileged children.

Recently the actor donated 25 computers to an NGO, Saint Catherine’s Home in Bandra. The actor visits this NGO twice a month to interact and play with the children residing there. On one of his visits he learnt that the children were keen to learncomputers but the institution didn’t have enough funds to arrange foe sufficient sets, so the actor with the Golden heart went ahead and arranged for 25 computers.

We hope that all privileged people would follow the steps of our very own Sallu Bhai, and then soon poverty would be a thing of the past.

Salman gifts NGO kids 25 computers

Salman Khan recently gifted 25 computers to children at a Bandra shelter. Salman is a regular visitor at Saint Catherine's Home, meeting the children there twice a month. He learnt during one of his visits that the children housed there wanted to study computers but there were not enough for all of them. So Salman immediately gave the staff enough money to buy 25 computers. He even accompanied the staff to the shop so that they can buy the best machines.
While Salman has been doing charitable work for a long time, he formalized it when he founded the Being Human Foundation in 2007. Since then, the actor has contributed to several causes. He raises funds for his foundation through fund raisers and by selling his paintings.

Honour killings: SC demands answers

NEW DELHI: With honour killings repeatedly making national headlines, the Supreme Court on Monday issued notices to the Centre, Haryana and seven states seeking their response on the steps taken to protect young couples from the deadly wrath of khap panchayats.

A vacation Bench comprising Justices R M Lodha and A K Patnaik were initially reluctant to entertain a PIL filed by NGO 'Shakti Vahini' highlighting the rein of terror of khap panchayats dishing out extreme penalties to couples who fell in love or eloped transgressing the socially resented sagotra marital relationships.

When the Bench was weighing the necessity of the court's intervention when it appeared to it that the government was alive to the situation, counsel for the NGO Ravi Kant said that FIRs have been registered only after the brutal murder of couples.

"No step was taken to prevent such extreme punishment awarded by kangaroo courts in the name of saving family and community honour," he said, adding apart from numerous honour killings reported from Haryana and others states, two incidents have been reported from Delhi in the last couple of days.

Politicians have added fuel to the fire by making statements that appeared to approve the doings of the khap panchayats mainly because these village committees influenced the voters to a large extent, Kant alleged.

The issuance of notice on the PIL against honour killings ordered ostensibly by khap panchayats assumes significance as just a week back the apex court had refused to entertain another PIL seeking amendment to the Hindy Marriage Act for a ban on same `gotra' marriages, a plea raised militantly by khap panchayats.

The PIL has sought a direction to the Centre and the states of Haryana, UP Punjab, Rajasthan, Jharkhand, Bihar, Himachal Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh where it said honour killings have been practised in one form or the other.

It said the khap panchayat-inflicted punishment on couples marrying against social norms could be equated with long-term low level physical abuse and bullying as a punishment for bringing alleged dishonor to the family.

"Such crimes include battery, torture, mutilation, rape, forced marriage, imprisonment within the home, and even murder. These crimes are intended to protect the family honour by preventing and punishing women for allegedly violating community norms for behaviour -- particularly sexual behaviour. Women have been abducted, arrested, or raped and are often blamed for shaming their families. Reasons for honour killings can be as trivial as talking to a man, or as innocent as suffering rape. These crimes are often collective and premeditated," it said.

The NGO suggested that the states should constitute a special cell in each district which should be able to provide protection to the khap tormented couples once they approach it.

Was duped by NGO staffer: Official

CHENNAI: With the busting of the illegal child adoption racket, the Guild of Service (GoS), an NGO, has found itself in the news for all the wrong reasons, for social worker Shaila Samuel, working with it, used the children's home inmates to give them up for adoption through unlawful means.

She used the agency's name, stamp, other related documents, such as authorisation letters and the NGO's registration certificate to carry out her work.

K N George, honorary secretary of the NGO, has given in writing to the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) that Shaila had carried out all the activities without his knowledge.

The senior officer of the Social Welfare Department, who illegally adopted Sweety, claimed that it was Shaila who had cheated saying that all documents for adoption had been cleared, according to Manorama, chairperson of CWC, Chennai.

Four children who had gone missing from the GoS had been put up at children's homes following referrals by the Sheela Hospital, where Parveen Banu had given birth to her child, Sweety. The NGO's involvement in the racket was unearthed after the CWC found out that Sweety had been illegally put up for adoption after duping her parents. The four were routed through Salem Missionaries of Charities and Cheshire Homes of India at Thiruvanmiyur and later to the GoS.

In Sweety's case, the hospital has given the wrong diagnosis to the parents in 2005 saying their baby suffered from an incurable ailment and would die soon after birth. The hospital had even obtained release forms from them, in which they stated they were willingly giving their child up for adoption.

However, five years later, Sweety is still healthy. In the other two cases, the hospital had failed to provide proper details such as the parents' address to a probation officer of the CWC, Coimbatore, said Manomara.

Shaila had cheated two other women in another case gave their children for adoption without the committee's knowledge, she said, adding, "We suspect Shaila has links with NGOs and the hospital in Coimbatore." Manorama said the committee had referred the case to the city police.

Naxal leader ran NGO in Delhi

NEW DELHI: An alleged urban area commander of CPI (Maoists) operating out of Surat in Gujarat for the past 13 years was arrested by the special cell of Delhi Police on Sunday night. The police said that the accused has been identified as Abdul Shakir Pasha (40). Senior police officers said that Pasha was picked up from his hideout in a government quarter in Sector 6 RK Puram.

Pasha, who allegedly used several names to conceal his identity, was running an NGO for the homeless in Delhi at Katwaria Sarai for the past one year. He is originally from Mumbai. Sources in the Gujarat ATS and Surat Police claimed that Pasha was the area committee secretary of Surat. ‘‘Based out of Surat in the initial years, Pasha had been instrumental in recruiting new cadres. We have recovered several incriminating documents, including Maoist literature and future plans for expanding the Maoist base in northern India,’’ said a senior special cell officer.

The arrest came after the Gujarat police issued a look-out notice against the accused. ‘‘The Gujarat police had contacted us and we worked on the leads provided by them to nab Pasha. The arrest was a culmination of an FIR that was filed by Surat Police in February earlier this year to curb Naxal activities. Twelve others have been already arrested before Pasha was nabbed,’’ said an officer. The accused completed his MCom in 1994 from Mumbai University and allegedly underwent training in Chhattisgarh camps.
But Pasha’s family denied all the police claims. ‘‘There is nothing. The cops are claiming that Pasha was involved in Maoist activities and that he actively stayed in touch with rebels in the red country and Maoist ideologues like Kobad Ghandy. The truth is that he has been involved with the city’s NGO movement for the past six years. He has never visited any Maoist affected zones of this country,’’ said Anju Shakeel, his wife.

The Gujarat police has taken Pasha on a two-day transit remand to Surat.

The cops said that this was the sixth major arrest of a Maoist leader from the capital after the arrest of Kobad Ghandy. Earlier, leader of a little known trade union, ‘Mehnatkhush Mazdoor Morcha’, was arrested in the capital for suspected links with the ultra Left. He was the Delhi chief of proscribed CPI (Maoist). The special cell claimed that the accused Gopal Mishra was a close aide of Kobad Ghandy and was instrumental in organising the CPI (Maoist) cadre in Delhi.

Mishra’s wife Anjali alias Anu too was arrested from her east Delhi residence the next day. The police claimed Anjali worked as a personal assistant to her husband.

The south district police had also arrested a Naxal leader from Bihar from the Tughlakabad area earlier. ‘‘It shows that the Naxals are increasingly coming to Delhi for medical treatment or just to escape security forces. With the Games round the corner, we are taking no chances regarding Maoist activities in the capital,’’ said a senior officer from the special cell.

Friends of Children (FoCh) need a laptop, volunteers and help with computer training

Greetings from Friends of Children Trust (http://www.friendsofchildrentrust.org) . Our mission has been to support higher education for under-privileged in Bangalore with special focus on girl child.

With the beginning of new academic year, we are entering in to 10th year of our operation. Many of you have supported our efforts all along. Sincere thank you!!

We are proud to say that there were many students who could realize their dreams to study beyond 10th standard through us. Lot of the families are able to educate their children now. Many of those are able to start earning.

We have few very urgent requirement in this regard:

1. We have a student Meenakshi who is preparing for IAS/KAS exams. She needs an old laptop to be able to go through various videos and coaching materials. We need this by July 1st week.

2. Need volunteers to mentor PUC-1, PUC-2, BCom-1 and BCom-2 students on Sundays at St Teresa's school, Chamarajpeta between 10AM to 1PM. We need committment at least for 4 months, starting as early as possible.

3. All the students badly need very basic computer training. Since we don't have any office space or staff, we need a laptop to empower them with MS-Office skills. This allows them to be able to do some part time job when needed. Even otherwise, most of the jobs now a days require basic computer skills and hence without these skills, they are at a clear disadvantage compared to others even for a small job.

Please get back to me if you can help in any possible way.

Regards,

Ravi (vravi1@gmail.com)
