Third Annual Open Enterprise Solutions to Poverty Request for Proposals

The SEVEN Fund’s Request for Proposals under the Third Annual Solutions to Poverty” will award “two (2) research grants of no more than $100,000 each.”

“The aim of SEVEN Fund sponsored research is to challenge the prevailing state of mind in this field. We want to answer the question of whether wealth-creation may be the most effective solution to alleviate poverty. We invest our efforts and resources to find, research, and document examples where entrepreneurial success is shown to have led to poverty alleviation. In the process, we will seek to inspire entrepreneurs in developing countries with advice, investments, role models, and services.

At SEVEN, we believe that enterprise solutions to poverty already exist, but are not sufficiently studied, analyzed, and exhibited as examples. There are specific questions that have no formulated answers – it is our aim to sponsor research to explore and find these answers. For example:

1. What are the most significant qualities of a successful entrepreneur, especially in the uncertain environment of a developing economy?
2. Can entrepreneurship be taught, inspired, and diffused through a society?
3. Could support for the entrepreneurial spirit serve as role models of sustainable solutions to poverty?
4. What is the relationship between prosperity and progressive human values?
5. How can enterprises contribute to making stronger societies?

Questions like these lie at the heart of enterprise-based solutions to poverty, and at the foundation of our understanding of how to help an economy grow and, ultimately, help bring about a high and rising standard of living for the vast majority of citizens. Answers to these questions will have implications for governments, multilateral donors, corporations, financial institutions, investors, and citizens in general.”

“Evaluation Criteria & Project Eligibility

In this RFP competition, SEVEN will award grants of varying value (no single grant will exceed $100,000 and twelve months) to exceptional research proposals meeting the criteria. Researchers in academic and other institutions may apply for projects up to one year in duration, beginning March 15, 2011. Grant applications will be subject to a competitive process of confidential expert review similar to that employed by similar grant funding agencies.”

The last date to submit initial proposals is 15 October 2010. For more information, visit this link.

Bid for a CEO of your choice

Kalpana Pathak / Mumbai September 23, 2010, 1:17 IST

Indian School of Business (ISB) students will now have the chance to ‘Shadow a CEO’ for a price — bid for India Inc’s Who’s Who and spend a day with one to get a few management tips.

The programme that began last year has seen the list of CEOs – who will be put under the hammer – grow. Over 30 CEOs, including Adi Godrej, Analjit Singh, Chanda Kochhar, G V Sanjay Reddy and Nitin Paranjpe, are on the list. The bidding process will be conducted online.

The funds mobilised will be used for charity. The bidding will be held from September 27 to 30. Last year, 16 CEOs had participated in the process and Rs 15 lakh was generated through the auction. The money was given for charity.

The top three bidders for each CEO will be short-listed and need to submit a Letter of Intent on why they are bidding for a particular CEO.

A panel comprising faculty and administrative members from ISB will review the letters of intent and decide collectively on who is the most deserving student to shadow the CEO.

After the winners of the bidding process are announced, the CEO can match the amount raised by the students, with equal or more, and the funds raised from the auction will then go to a NGO of the CEO's choice. The bidding process is open to all students of the ISB.

Several students, however, did not agree with the way the programme was conducted. One of them said on condition of anonymity that though he would love to “shadow a CEO” for a day, he cannot afford to participate in the auction with the bidding going into lakhs. “I do not have the money to participate. So I have decided to keep out of the programme.”

ISB Dean Ajit Rangnekar said everything is done for a good cause. “The first edition of this exercise was so successful that we decided to continue with it this year. Not only the students, but the CEOs were also very enthusiastic about the programme. I think, in India, the concept of philanthropy is limited to donating money to temples. We should teach the students to service the society as well,” said Rangnekar.

The institute will organise an open auction where students will bid for a CEO of their choice. The funds raised from the auction will go to an NGO of the CEO's choice. This initiative is part of the Joy of Giving Week by the Give India Foundation.

“We are all ecstatic about working with these CEOs who dominate India’s business world. The objective of this programme is twofold – engage ISB students in the act of giving and provide a lifetime opportunity of spending a day with a CEO, watch them at work and imbibe valuable leadership lessons. The bidding process begins next week and over 60 per cent of the students are expected to participate from a batch size of 575 students,” said Sidharth Malhotra, an ISB student.

Raise the bar with your charity, get rewarded

If you want to contribute to society by supporting your favourite NGO, here’s a golden opportunity. After a successful first year, GiveIndia is back with its second edition of the India Giving Challenge, an online fundraising event that sees NGOs, corporates and individuals getting rewarded for raising funds for their chosen cause.

It provides a way for NGOs to raise even more money for their cause through a matching grant (Rs65 lakh), given out in the form of prizes, from GiveIndia. The Challenge is an initiative under the Joy of Giving Week. The competition began on September 8 and will be on till October 20.

“We are trying to build a community approach of fundraising through this process,” GiveIndia chief information officer Dhaval Udani said. “The competition will run for six weeks and by the end of it, we are certain that around 200 NGOs will enrol,” says Udani. So far, GiveIndia has contacted 40 corporates, out of which 20 have confirmed participation. Around 150 NGOs are participating too.

GiveIndia is a donation platform that allows people to support a cause of their choice from about 200 NGOs, which are scrutinised for transparency and credibility. The organisation helps NGOs with sample letters that must be sent out to the donors and on using social networking sites to ensure optimum benefits. “NGOs are not too technology-savvy. Through this, we try to enhance their fund raising ability,” Udani said.

Vinayak Lohani, founder and head of Parivaar Education Society, an NGO, which won the Challenge last year, said, “A healthy competition like this helps to energise our donors and volunteers, and helps in network building.” The NGO collected 23 lakh last year and won Rs12 lakh from GiveIndia. It has already won the first week of the competition this year. Fourteen corporates and 100 NGOs raised Rs91 lakh from about 5,000 donors last year and received Rs56 lakh in matching grants.

IndiBloggers, the largest community for bloggers, has partnered with GiveIndia for its India Giving Challenge. It has a discussion forum where bloggers clear their doubts or queries about the online competition. “This way, we reach out to a wider audience and their questions are answered by GiveIndia,” explained Renie Ravin, managing director, IndiBloggers.

Rajasthan village uses touch screen to find jobs

Bhilwara, Rajasthan: At a small village in Rajasthan's Bhilwara, job searches have gone high-tech. Villagers can now find jobs provided by the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, simply with a touch of their finger.

At a kiosk set up by the NGO OneWorld Foundation India, the worker can just place his thumb on the scanner, and his job status will pop up on the screen. It is also delivered by a recorded voice.

"Earlier, we used to go to the village council office to apply for a job. Now, we can come to the information service centre and apply through the computer. We can also check our job card, register complaints or get a payment receipt simply at the touch of your finger. This centre has made our lives easier," said Sumitra, a resident of Bhilwara.

Workers can apply for future jobs by sending a message to a central helpline, using a special sms service.

Any complaints can be registered online and are addressed by the district administration.

"Workers come here and whatever complaints they have, whether it's related to the bank or the payment, or distribution of work, they come here and register their complaint online," said Ashish Maheshwari, a district administration official.

The service is so impressive, that the rural development ministry plans to extend it across the country.
