TED Fellows Program is open to accepting applications


TED is accepting applications for its 2011 TED Fellows program which is designed to bring together young world-changers and trailblazers who have shown unusual accomplishment and exceptional courage.


The program targets individuals from the Asia/Pacific region, Africa, the Caribbean, Latin America and the Middle East, though anyone from anywhere in the world, age 18 and over, is welcome to apply.


The TED Fellows participate in either our TED Conference in Long Beach, California or the TEDGlobal event in Edinburgh, U.K. In addition to attending the conferences, Fellows will participate in specially designed pre-conference programs with training from the world’s experts in spreading great ideas.


Applications for TEDGlobal 2011 Fellows are due by Friday, March 11, 12:00pm US/Eastern.

Heinz Fellowships for individuals from developing countries who demonstrate potential as future leaders in the public, government, non-profit or private sectors


The Global Studies Center at the Pittsburgh University Center for International Studies is offering the Heinz Fellowship, supported by the H.J. Heinz Company Foundation. The fellowship provides an opportunity to undertake one year of practical, professional, and non-degree education experiences through the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania, USA.


Heinz Fellowships are granted to individuals from developing countries who demonstrate potential as future leaders in the public, government, non-profit, or private sectors. The goal is to improve, early in a career, the fellows’ capacity to contribute to the development of their country and to enhance their understanding of the United States. This is accomplished through a year of sitting in on selected courses and participating in practical professional activities while based in Pittsburgh. Upon acceptance of their final report, fellows will receive a program certificate from the University Center for International Studies. This is non-degree program. Courses are observed on an informal basis, and do not earn credit towards any academic degree.


Fellows will receive a living stipend of $18,000 (paid in monthly installments), mandatory health insurance, round-trip transportation to and from Pittsburgh, and a $2,000 program and professional activities fund.


Two candidates will be chosen each year. One fellowship will be awarded to a candidate from either China, India, or Indonesia who specializes in public health and the other applicant should be working in Governance, Public Health, Business, Education, Law or Engineering.

The Journal of Environmental Investing Scholarship Program


The Journal of Environmental Investing Scholarship Program will award US$3,500 to the graduate student who writes the most original and rigorous manuscript on a topic related to environmental investing. Students seeking an advance degree in a discipline related to environmental investing (e.g., environmental science, environmental policy, sustainability, environmental law, finance, economics, and public affairs and policy) are invited to present ideas and research.


The JEI SP was founded in 2010 by a gift from the Journal of Environmental Investing to promote, encourage, and support interdisciplinary scholarship by active graduate students who are studying in relevant fields. The Program’s goal is to facilitate capital flow to effective, scalable solutions to the world’s most pressing environmental challenges. Interested and qualified students are invited to submit a curriculum vitae, a 225-word abstract of his/her manuscript, and a letter from his/her college or university attesting to the applicant’s academic status. If an abstract proves acceptable, the author will be invited to submit an original manuscript (no more than 5,000 words excluding notes, references, and supporting materials). Special consideration will be given to contributions from students in “emerging markets” as defined by the International Finance Corporation of the World Bank.

SWP’s Call for Applications for TAPIR 2011


The Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik (German Institute for International and Security Affairs – SWP) has issued a 2011 call for applications for the Transatlantic Post-Doc Fellowship for International Relations and Security (TAPIR).


It is an opportunity for young academics with a background in international relations and international security. The fellows spend a total of 24 months in three different research institutions or think tanks in order to build skills in policy-oriented research and create their own networks.


The fellowship consists of


* a monthly stipend of Euro 1,800.-
* a monthly allowance for health insurance of Euro 200.-
* and a one-time travel allowance of Euro 3,500 for travel to and from the host institutions.


Fees for residence permits are not included.


To be eligible for the Transatlantic Post-Doc Fellowship, candidates should have successfully defended their Ph.D. by the start of the program (October 1st, 2011). Candidates must have a strong interest in working in a policy-oriented international environment and must demonstrate their ability to do so by previous international academic experience. U.S., Canadian and European (in a broader geographical definition) nationals can apply to the program.

Rachel Carson Center’s Fellowship Program Call for Applications


The Rachel Carson Center for Environment and Society invites applications for its 2011-2012 class of postdoctoral and senior fellows. The fellowship program, directed by Christof Mauch (LMU Munich/ Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität) and Helmuth Trischler (Deutsches Museum) is designed to bring to Munich a cohort of excellent scholars who are working in the environmental humanities and related disciplines.


The Center will award fellowships to scholars from around the globe and from a variety of disciplines. Research and writing of applicants should preferably pertain to one (or more) of the topics that will be at the core of the Center’s 2011-2012 research agenda:


* Environmental Ethics, Politics, and Movements
* Resource Use and Conservation
* Transformation of Landscapes


Applications that deal with past and future topics of the Center will also be considered. They include:


* Environmental Knowledge and Knowledge Societies
* Natural Disasters and Cultures of Risk
* Ecological Imperialism


The program is a writing fellowship program; the Carson Center does not sponsor field trips or archival research. Fellowships will usually be granted for periods of 6, 9 or 12 months but they can also be granted for 3 months or be broken up into individual 3 month periods. Fellows are expected to be in residence, to work on a major research project, attend the weekly Carson collquium and present their research at the Center.


The Carson Center will pay for a replacement of the successful candidate at his or her home institution; alternatively it will pay a fellowship that is commensurate with experience and current employment.

UNESCO calling for experts to provide technical assistance for strengthening the Governance of Culture in Developing Countries


The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has launched its first joint EU/UNESCO technical assistance project aimed at strengthening the system of governance for culture in developing countries and reinforce the role of culture as a vector for sustainable development and poverty reduction. The project contributes directly towards the implementation of the 2005 Convention.


30 top experts will be selected through this call and will make up a “pool of experts”, reflecting diverse profiles, experiences and geographical regions and representing a wide range of competences and expertise related to the governance of culture.


Beneficiary countries will select one or several expert(s) from this pool of experts to carry out technical assistance missions designed to build up human and institutional capacities in beneficiary countries at the national and local level.


Professionals with a minimum of 10 years of experience (minimum 7 years for applicants who are Nationals of beneficiary countries) are sought in fields relating to:


- the elaboration and implementation of cultural policies; and/or


- the development of cultural sectors and policy-making in developing countries; and/or


- international cooperation in the field of culture.


Only Eligible Nationals of countries having ratified the 2005 Convention can apply. For the list of these countries, click here. Applications from experts from developing countries are strongly encouraged.

Aga Khan Foundation’s International Scholarship Programme

The Aga Khan Foundation is accepting applications for the 2011-12 International Scholarship Programme given for postgraduate studies to outstanding developing country students who have no means of financing their studies. Scholarships are given to students on a 50% grant: 50% loan basis.

The Foundation gives priority to requests for Master’s level courses but is also willing to consider applications for PhD programmes, when doctoral degrees are necessary for the career objectives of the student. Requests will also be considered for travel and study awards for PhD students doing their research in Third World countries on topics judged to be of interest to the Aga Khan Development Network.

The Foundation is accepting applications from following countries, where it has its branches, affiliates or other Aga Khan Development Network agencies:

Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Syria, Egypt, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Mozambique, Madagascar, France, Portugal, UK, USA and Canada.

The main criteria for selecting award winners are: l) excellent academic records, 2) genuine financial need, 3) admission to a reputable institution of higher learning and 4) thoughtful and coherent educational and career plans. Candidates are also evaluated on their extra-curricular interests and achievements, potential to achieve their goals and likelihood to succeed in a foreign academic environment. Applicants are expected to have some years of work experience in their field of interest.

Preference is given to students under 30 years of age.
