[GiveIndia.org - Spreading a giving culture] The Silent National Anthem
I went to a BIG Cinemas to watch a movie this evening. As most of you know, any movie in Maharashtra requires that the national anthem be played before it. I was absolutely floored by what I saw today!
Normally everyone sits down by the time the last line fades away. However today not a single soul in the theatre sat down till well past the last note of the music! Do see it. Its absolutely fabulous!
Conceptualized by Mudra and directed by Amit Sharma this was released today on the occasion of Republic Day. On the first day of the release, this video has already received more than 125,000 views on Youtube and more than 1000 ratings & comments on the video. Congratulations Reliance Mediaworks, BIG Cinemas, Mudra and especially Amit Sharma who have all come together to shoot one of the most evocative renderings of our national anthem.

'Teaching Peace' with Linda Hess, Feb 3, Pune
Teaching Peace: An interactive discourse by scholar and writer Linda Hess
Venue: Open Space, 301, (second floor), Kanchanjunga bldg. Kanchan lane,
off Law College Road, Near Krishna Dining Hall, Pune -411004
Date: February 3, 2011
Time: 5.30 – 7.30pm
Most
violent events in history involve ordinary people, not just criminals,
lunatics or sociopaths. We ask ourselves “How can people do such
things?” “Could we also do such things under similar circumstances?”
“How could we prepare ourselves not to behave that way?”
Is
education irrelevant and useless to learning ways of dealing with
conflict? Can education touch children and youth in a transformative
way--a way that gives them hope of integrating the various parts of
themselves and their world, changing themselves and the world?
To
arouse a deeper and more powerfully felt engagement with these
questions, Open Space invites youth, educators, activists, artistes,
media professionals and all interested to interact with Dr Linda Hess,
who has developed an experimental course to:
(1) investigate the connections between inner and outer worlds, the personal and social-political roots of (non)violence;
(2)
take steps, as participants in history, toward recognizing and
transforming violence in ourselves at the same time as we strive to
solve social, political, economic, environmental, and other problems
that confront us.
This interaction is a continuation of Open
Space’s Keeping The Peace lecture series to encourage discussion and
dialogue on issues that are dividing and polarising society and public
opinion.
The interaction will explore new ways of teaching compassion and ethics.
Linda
says: “We keep things compartmentalized. It is this hard separation
between what we call “intellectual” and the other parts of our being,
including the emotional, imaginative, and moral, that gives rise to
despair about the meaning of education…”
All are welcome.

Student Seminar at TISS, Bombay on Jan 29-30
The idea of “art” has worn many garbs through the centuries and has shaped and become part of multiple and varied conceptions of social reality. Art, once it discarded its burden of verisimilitude to a reality out there, has often been seen as potentially subversive because of its ability to defamiliarise the familiar, to open up new ways of seeing and being. This potential of art to resist dominant ideologies has generally been attributed to avant garde “high” art, as opposed to popular forms.
Moving from a once canonised exclusive social milieu where art forms were viewed as reserved only for a “discerning” elite class, we have seen ruptures in space and time where popular culture, indigenous, folk and traditional art forms have entered the academic debate with the sort of energy that shook the ivory tower of high culture from its foundations. Moreover newer forms of expression have emerged out of the unique encounters and the social processes that the contemporary scenario throws together. It is important then at this critical juncture to look afresh at our conception of art and how we can view its articulation within relations of power and resistance in the social matrix.
In a broad sweep of “the arts” we can include visual art of all kinds, (cinema, painting, installation etc.) literature, performative arts as well as other more innovative forms which use an aesthetic base to project their content.
One cannot view the arts in isolation from social and political events. The very production of these works is often embedded within broader discourses of the communities and the prevalent cultural dynamic. In this seminar we seek to understand and critically interrogate works of art that question dominant ideologies and structures within the frameworks of gender, religion, caste, class and the nation. We are looking specifically here at forms of art which offer up the potential for a subversive politics within the subcontinent.
