Help Sought for a Film on Waste in Bombay
Helloooo!
I am working on a film on waste in Mumbai for an organization! Well I promise it is not as HEAVY! YUKKY ! DIRTY! BORING! as the brief below may make it sound! It is going to be fun and thought provoking film!
Infact I honestly just LOVE the connections that we are about to build in this film.
Here is a short note on the film:
This film is trying to draw the linkage between urban living, aspirations and the waste that we create. Mumbai like most other cities is facing a huge problem of waste. There are several awareness campaigns and so many people trying to get waste segregation done, but somehwhere despite so much of awareness campaigns n information available, why is it that people don't turn to being more sensitive n responsible to waste creation n disposal. The film is focussing on a disconnect urban citizens ( and in this case) mumbai have with natural environment. But there is an impending crisis and it can't go on long till we are so insensitive to nature. The film is trying to draw this connection of our relationship with nature..
I NEED:
- Interesting locations mainly high rises from where i can shoot mumbai's skyline, traffic, sea slums etc ..
so anyone living in a building where we can get access to the terrace and an awesome view of crowded Mumbai be it of buildings, traffic or anything else ... PLEASE let me know ...
- Interesting/enthusiastic people who know and would like to talk about this topic to us? environment group, college groups etc
- Actor- Looking for a young college going girl to play the role of Maya in this film. She is the only actor in the film :)
Let me know if there is any more clarity I can give you on any of this..
Promise to take you out for AWESOME naturals ICE CREAM at marine drive if you help me !
ThankuUUU
SACH!

Two New Books for Teenagers
From: Goanet News
Date: 26 April 2011
Subject: BOOK REVIEW: Guides for those teenage years (FN, Gomantak Times)
Guides for those teenage years
First published in THE PRINTED WORD|Gomantak Times
Frederick Noronha
Teenage can be a period of confusion and challenges. To find their way around, young people need the right advice and guidance. For centuries, parents and teachers have been considered too 'old fashioned' to offer guidance at this
stage. So, what is the way out?
Salesian priest Banzelao Teixeira of Don Bosco Benaulim has co-edited (with Teresa Joseph, fma) a couple of books for teens. The first is called *Teens, Your Key to Success*. But possibly the second might be more intriguing, *Teen Q's on
Love and Relationships*.
Coming from the religious, both books are sober and realastic, while avoiding the trap of being dull or boring. The style is one likely to appeal to elder teens, or those who appreciate the importance of such advice, probably only after having burnt fingers.
The book on teen success focuses on four broad areas -- careers and goal setting, teens and self-understanding, difficult emotions, and sexual maturity.
To have to decide on a life-shaping career at the age of 16 or 17 does place an unfair burden on our youth. All of us fumbled our way through this maze in our times too. But, it could be argued that this information would at least be relevant and accessible to teachers, specially the first section on careers and goal setting.
It does help to have the information in easy-to-access, point form with a few images thrown in. Time-management is something every young person could profitably use; but in this day and age of instant gratification, are such concepts
going to be actually implemented from a book?
Somehow, the choice of topics is interesting and useful. But what remains to be seen is how much of the message reaches home. In times of growing suicides -- not to talk about the wider plague of low self-esteem and never-having-enoughism --
among students, dealing with stress is a useful topic covered.
Somewhere along the way, the book suggests that sex is meant for procreation "to generate life" rather than for pleasure or gratification. Today, it is widely accepted that sexual intercourse happens for a variety of reasons -- ranging from the reproductive (in a tiny section of the cases) to one of emotional bonding between mated pairs, or more realistically even for shared pleasure. While it does make sense to convince our youth that there is a life beyond mere sex, unrealistic assumptions and attitudes are unlikely to help.
But that's perhaps where the companion volume comes in.
*Teen Q's* is well argued, and points out that relationships can be complex and tough, definitely not the stuff that televisions and films make them out to be. In 18 brief chapters, the book talks about a range of issues. Right from the fading nature of beauty, and how to terminate a relationship that is "not working".
In our times, relationships are definitely getting more complex and hurtful, even as expectations grow unrealistically. Facebook has a catchphrase to describe this trend -- "it's complicated". How do we handle this by going beyond merely a morality-based obsession with sex?
*Teen Q's* discusses what love is, and tips on how to "impress guys" by not overdoing things, dressing well (not vulgarly), developing mental faculties, being humane, being confident and developing a positive attitude towards life. An
entire chapter looks at how to handle a 'no' and another on repairing a broken relationship.
Both are worth owning titles for parents and teachers, besides the teens it is targeted at. Not sure how these are obtainable in Goa, but might be available via the Don Bosco's network, at least in Benaulim.

Fw: PROTEST IN BANGALORE ON CHERNOBYL DAY - 26 April 2011, 5 pm Town Hall
PROTEST
IN BANGALORE ON CHERNOBYL DAY
April 26, 2011. 5
pm. Venue: Town Hall
Dear friends,
25 years have passed after Chernobyl nuclear accident. During this period, most of the western countries have stopped building new nuclear plants. India however,is pursuing this dangerous technology in an aggressive manner.
Chernobyl: An estimated 65,000 to 105,000 people were killed due to
Chernobyl nuclear accident. Chernobyl released a thousand times more radiation than the Hiroshima bomb into the atmosphere. The wind carried particles of radiation up to Europe. In Holland, thousands of cattle where dumped as radiation waste. People are still dying and will continue to die for
generations due to this accident. There have been at least 22 major and thousands of minor nuclear accidents before and after Chernobyl!
Fukushima: The response of the nuclear advocates after Chernobyl was
that it was due to poor Soviet technology and bureaucratic nature of the
system. They conveniently forgot the Three Mile Island accident in the United
States. And now, Japan, a country which excelled in technology has become a
victim of its own creation. Unlike India, the Japanese have imposed strict
standards for plant construction. But still, the accident took place. Water,
food, air and even essential commodities in Japan today carry the potential of
a catastrophe of cancer and genetic disorders for generations. Radiation from
the nuclear explosion has already reached up to California. Given the context
of connections through water, wind, trade, animal, birds and insect population,
common sense would tell us that radiation has already reached India.
However, with the past legacy of silence and lies of the nuclear establishment, it wouldbe very difficult for the people of this country to discover the truth, aboutthe real impact of Fukushima on India.
Nuclear India: As far as India is concerned, disaster is a continuing
phenomenon. Most of the nuclear set ups here are producing cancer and
genetic disorders regularly. Indian Rare Earths, Kota, Jadhuguda, Kalpakkam,
Kaiga and other bodies of Department of Atomic Energy have produced cancer,
down syndrome, skin disorders and reproductive problems for both men and women. The extent of damage so far is still to be studied properly by independent researchers.
Kaiga: As per reports, Yellapur panchayat, which is 20 km away from Kaiga has recorded a ten fold increase of cancer cases. Many abortion cases are also noticed. The officials have always denied any leak from Kaiga. Normal functioning of the plant will release radiation through the regular water release as well as through air. A nuclear plant generates 20 to 30 tonnes of nuclear waste every year. No Science has so far found any safe mechanism for disposing nuclear waste. Eminent scientists have warned us about the alarming quantities of nuclear waste being generated and absolutely inadequate mechanisms and practices to handle it in India. But these warnings have gone on deaf ears of the authorities. Given the connectionsof water, wild life, air and agriculture,Radiation from Kaiga can reach Bangalore without much effort. The question therefore is: Do we have a right to safe living? At the time of Chernobyl disaster, 200,000 pregnant mothers were asked to abort their children. If a similar accident takes place in Kaiga, what would be the implication for the women and children of Karnataka?
People’s Right:It has come to a stage that if we need a safe life, we need to come out on streets and demand it. Our safety will not be given as acharity. It is time that all citizen’s groups come together and demand for a nuclear free world. If we leave our fate to nuclear scientists and politicians, the next Chernobyl may be right here. With this realization, in order to remember 25 years of Chernobyl, many groups in Bangalore have come together under the banner of Peoples' Solidarity Concerns, to strongly assert and demand an end to this nuclear madness. We request all those who care for humanity to support this protest. Better to Be Active than to Be Radioactive!
We condemn:
1. The absolute secrecy of the nuclear establishment and the total
undemocratic functioning of the Department of Atomic Energy. We are shocked
that in this democratic country, the Department of Atomic Energy is not even
accountable to the Indian Parliament!
2. The illegal detention and harassment of 134 activists protesting
peacefully against the Jaitapur power plant including Arti Chokshi,
Secretary, PUCL, Karnataka and colleague of Peoples' Solidarity Concerns. This
clearly explains the undemocratic functioning of the nuclear establishment,
which tolerates no criticism.
We Demand:
1.An immediate halt to all existing and future nuclear power projects.
2.An independent enquiry into the already existing health effects created by the nuclear power projects.
3.Proper relief, medical care and compensation for those affected with cancer, down syndrome and other health problems due to the functioning of the nuclear power plants.
4.A complete review of the Indian official secrets act under which the Nuclear insanity is perpetuated.
No More Chernobyl, No More
Three Mile Island, No more Fukushima!
It is Better to Be Active now than to Being Radioactive tomorrow!

V.C. Menon :Indians need be more prepared for natural calamities
Within a month after a magnitude 9.0 earthquake struck Japan, India experienced two moderate tremors. Were these warnings for something bigger? If experts are to believed, they were and say Indians need to be more prepared to deal with natural calamities.
"Some of these could also be seen as a precursor for something bigger, considering India's vulnerability to earthquakes because of its location in a high risk seismic zone," N.V.C. Menon, former member of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), said.
According to him, it is important to launch an awareness campaign to prepare Indian households to prepare them in responding to natural calamities such as the one that wreaked destruction in Japan.
"We could face massive destruction if a high intensity earthquake strikes India," Menon said, stressing there is the "need for a massive awareness campaign as people here are not clear about the steps needed to reduce the impact of an earthquake."
The government, under the aegis of NDMA, is working to enhance India's preparedness to face an event like that in Japan.
However, people should also prepare themselves to deal with an emergency, Menon said.
Households in quake-prone areas should prepare emergency kits with candles, medicines, match boxes, important documents and other necessary items so that they can evacuate immediately in the event of an earthquake.
Studies have shown that more than 60 percent of India is vulnerable to earthquakes and most of the deaths during a quake are caused by the collapse of buildings.
According to geographical data, Kashmir, Punjab, the western and central Himalayas, the northeastern region and the Rann of Kutch fall under the Zone 5 category, referred to as the Very High Damage Risk Zone.

Release of Survey Findings on Sex Workers, April 30, Bombay
Invitation for a meeting
First Pan-India Survey of Female Sex Workers
Release of preliminary findings on the eve of Labour Day, May 1
The first pan-India survey of female sex workers under the aegis of Centre for Advocacy on Stigma and Marginalization, Sangli, was conducted by Rohini Sahni and V Kalyan Shakar of the Department of Economics, University of Pune. This unique survey documents the lived realities of sex workers; delves into the complex details of their day-to-day interactions; the stigma and marginalization they experience and attempts to understand the challenges they face as well as their complex responses. The survey pools together a large national level sample of 3000 unorganized sex workers from 14 states. The women who participated in the survey are from various geographies, ages, family backgrounds, languages, sites of operation, migratory patterns, incomes and cultures.
In analyzing sex as work and sex workers’ tryst with labour, startling findings
emerged: a majority (almost 70 percent) of women irrespective of the channel of entry came into sex work by themselves economic reasons were the major driving factor.sex work offers a significant premium of incomes to
other activities in the labour market
TheReport throws light on the complex issue of women’s sexual labour, a hitherto marginalized form of labour. Dr Rohini Sahni will present the study, its
context and the preliminary findings and this will be followed by a discussion
on the issues raised. We invite you for this meeting and hope you will be able to come for it.
