More About Tata Medical Center- A Ray of Hope for Poor

The Tata Group has always believed in returning wealth to the Society it serves. It has established philanthropic trusts which have created National Institutions in Science and Technology, Medical Research, Social Studies and the Performing Arts.

Tata Medical Center (TMC), Kolkata is a philanthropic initiative from the House of Tata. Its mission is to promote Prevention, Early Diagnosis, Treatment, Rehabilitation and Palliation and Research for cancer patients.

It is estimated that there are approximately 2.5 - 3 million prevalent cases of cancer in India at any given time. At the Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai, 25-30 % of registrations are from the Eastern, North-Eastern Regions of the country and from Nepal and Bangladesh. To provide these people access to world class Cancer Management and Care, the Tata Medical Centre Trust was formed in 2005 and the project launched.

This hospital will provide the entire spectrum of services from Prevention, Diagnosis, Therapy to Rehabilitation and Palliative support. The Tata Medical Center, Kolkata will be a comprehensive Cancer Care Center with well-trained professional staff and equipped with modern facilities and the most contemporary medical equipment.

The Hospital, with a capacity of 167 beds will be commissioned shortly. It will serve all sections of the Society, with 50% earmarked for free or subsidized treatment for the underprivileged sections. The Institution's objective is to excel in service, education and research.

This state-of-the-art Hospital has been set up with a strategic alliance and assistance from The Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai, which is one of the premier national institutions for cancer prevention, treatment, education and research with nearly 68 years of experience.

Tata Medical Center, Kolkata aims to be one of the leading Cancer Care and Research Institutions in the country and will benefit West Bengal as well as the adjoining states and neighboring countries.

This Institution has been set up at New town in the Rajarhat area of Kolkata on 13 acres of land and is managed by a professional management body reporting to the Tata Medical Centre Trust (TMCT), Kolkata.

The Hospital has been built on carefully landscaped grounds to emphasize the holistic approach in our crusade against cancer.

The buildings have been designed by Cannon Design, a renowned architectural firm from North America. Diagnosis and treatment will be characterized by a multi-disciplinary approach with Disease Management Teams, wherein experts from different streams viz. surgery, radiation oncology, medical oncology, pathology, radiology, psychiatry and medical social work will participate in decision-making for treatment protocols, using evidence-based medical strategies and appropriate documented clinical guidelines.

In the next hour alone, 100 more people will be diagnosed with Cancer. That’s about 3 million new cases of Cancer in India every year. Even more alarming is the lack of aid and support to combat this disease.

Tata Medical Center is a philanthropic initiative from the House of Tata, where 50% of the 150 hospital beds have been earmarked for the underprivileged - they will receive free or greatly subsidized care. A $50-million corpus is being aggregated, which will be used to subsidize the annual cost of life-saving medical care provided to patients in need. Your contribution, no matter how small, will be of immense help to those who desperately need it. Together, we can make a difference.
